What’s the most profound piece of advice you’ve been given? Did you take it?

People usually love to point out your faults and hop off the bandwagon at the first sign of trouble. The most profound piece of advice you’ve been given. I like to think that I’ve been very fortunate in my life to gain alot of wisdom through hard earned life experience. But, my reality has always been shaped by the love, support and advice of my mother.

The advice she gave me at very early age but that I didn’t fully grasp until much later, was to never gamble with my life and always invest in yourself. At first brush, it seems like its selfish and perhaps even a little paranoia, but upon closer inspection it was just life changing it was life saving.

I had a terrible accident in the military, but I had kept with me protective gear and wore armor that saved my life. I lived modestly, and when the chips were down, and I didn’t have a steady stream of income, I had smartly invested 15-18% of my paycheck, which helped me survive tough times and keep me afloat. Don’t gamble with your life and invest in yourself. In retrospect, I thought I shouldn’t shoot dice, pitch quarters, or play 3-card molly on the back of a bus, but investment is not just Wall Street, stocks and bonds or monetary. It is also protection, security, perseverance, intelligence, resilience, and trusting your gut! Investing in yourself is priceless. I’m thankful I took that advice and acted accordingly.
